In the old Windows Picture and Fax Viewer it was really easy to view the image in it's original size. There was an "Actual Size" button. This is gone in the new Photo Gallery and the only way to zoom seems to be using the slider, but you can't tell when you've reached the original size.
Is there an "Actual Size" function in Photo Gallery similar to the old Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?
Also I notice that when images are opened there is a blurring effect when it loads and then it goes into focus. Is this something that can be disabled?
Thanks

How do I view an image in it's Actual Size in Photo Gallery
Just right click - Edit - it'll open it in Paint in the real-size :o)

Thanks, but it would be nice to be able to do it without opening Paint. I just dont see why they removed a perfectly good feature for no reason.
Sorry about the double post, it gave me an error earlier.

I remember seeing a blog post from someone at MS stating that they will have an 'Actual Size' button in later builds.
I've also noticed the bluring to sharpening effect sometimes. I thought it may be related to rendering jpegs progressively if they had been encoded in a progressive format.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback. The "blurring" effect is part of a progressive load. It's actually a thumbnail stretched to the canvas size. We do this because it's much faster to load the lower resolution thumb and we can display that while we decode the full res image. There are a couple reasons we do this. First off it’s nice to know what is loading in the case that you have a large image. Secondly it enables you to navigate through your photos much quicker. Try holding down the arrow key next time you are in the viewer and you’ll see that you can navigate much faster than XP.
Unfortunately the Beta 2 image loading code isn’t quite optimized. In Beta 2 we always render a very low resolution thumbnail, which means lots of perceived blur. We were still in the midst of doing some performance tuning as Beta 2 went out the door and as a result we were using a 256x256 thumb which means lots of blur. We also use the embedded camera thumb which we’ve found can be even lower res.
In RC1/RTM you'll see the following: - The viewer will use a higher resolution thumb when available. This makes the blurring effect much less noticeable. - We won't be using camera thumbs since they tend to be unpredictable. - The fact that this is part of the load much more obvious to the user. - Performance improvements which should mean you see the thumbnail for a shorter period of time than in Beta 2.

Okay, I'd been assuming it was along the lines of a progressive jpeg file itself as opposed to using the thumbnail and then the real file.
I must say it must be using the embedded camera thumbnail in my case since I'm running at a pretty high resolution, 1920x1200 and in full screen the quality of the thumbnail, although slightly fuzzy is way better than stretching a 25x256 thumbnail to full screen size and the embedded thumbnail must be larger than 256x256.
One thing the photo viewer app did in XP was to load and decompress the next 1 or 2 images in the background while you were viewing the current image, so when you clicked next the next image would appear instantly.
Cheers

The precaching of the next image will also be implemented in RC1/RTM, but it's not in Beta 2 :(. The good news is doing precaching drastically improves the performance of iterating through a set of images.
